Welcome to Year 1

In Year 1, children will begin to move away from the child-led learning that forms our Early Years provision as they begin to follow the National Curriculum.

At Brindishe Schools, we have developed a curriculum overview for each year group which details the focus for each subject in each half term. Please click on the Year 1 curriculum overview below to find out more:

Year 1 CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Phonics, reading and writing

In Year 1, the children will continue their phonics learning using the Bug Club phonics programme and in June they will take the Phonics Screening Check. Whilst children learn phonics to help them with both word reading and spelling, the Phonics Screening Check only tests their skills at word reading. It is made up of 40 words divided into two sections of 20 words. Both sections contain a mixture of real words and pseudo-words. The check is designed to give our teachers information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage. There is an information leaflet for parents that has been produced by the Department for Education with further information below:

You can also find out more about how we teach Phonics, as well as early reading and writing, in the videos below.

Maths

In Year 1, our children continue to build their confidence working with numbers, through developing their counting and calculation skills. They will also gain an understanding of halves and quarters, start to measure and tell the time, and learn about some 2D and 3D shapes. They will be encouraged to use objects to help them solve simple problems in a practical way. You can find out more about how we teach Maths in Early Years and Year 1 in the video below.
